Fuck Politeness

This is a revolution, not a public relations movement

Ok, so I’m depressed. I’ve only been out of bed thirty minutes, and media has depressed the hell out of me yet again.

So the leading story on the SMH is about the two young Chinese women murdered in their flat and not found for at least three days. There were some reports that there was screaming from the flat, heard by a neighbour. There is also a belief that the pair were working as sex workers. What does the SMH do? What it always does. As many gory details as they can find, and a picture of the room in which the women were found dead. Encouraging voyeuristic imaginations about their fate.(Anybody NOT gone to rape/murder by a ‘client’ yet?)

It seems likely that these two women were working, with no security protection, as prostitutes. There is no likelihood of the media examining say, the systemic sexual commodification of Asian women by Western men, and the fact that that has led to sex slavery, both IN Asian countries with Western men touring AND within Australia. Why isn’t it discovered earlier? I guess the mates-protect-mates thing still works a treat.

No examination of the link between the systemic poverty of certain regions of the world, and this kind of prostitution by people who move to Australia from poorer countries, or the link between a low-income high-rise chock full of stressed out people, and people being unwilling to check in on neighbours when they hear screaming. (Is there the hint there that they regularly DID hear screaming and that that’s an accepted part of knowing the women worked as prositutes? No? Sure, cos we all now how respectful men have been to prostitutes in the past. No violence I’m sure).

There is no reflexivity about the outcomes of our greedy desire for the most shocking details of rape and murder we can find, anywhere, anytime, from any story. It’s as if we’re totally unashamed to say, “Well of COURSE these young women worked in the sex industry, being young Asian women, and hell, that’s what happens when you *choose* that path, and NOW their murders, their fear, what they went through is fodder for our titilation and gossip”.

Immediately after that I went to Hoyden where I learned that a men’s mag is running an Organ Donation advertisement that has a young (extremely young) typically sex-i-fied smooth, hairless woman leaning back in a limo, posed all ‘come fuck me’ style with the tagline “Becoming a donor is probably your only chance to get inside her”. Ok, so apart from the fact that it doesn’t *at all* encourage the sort of think-about-others, and hell, you can’t take your organs with you mentality that gets you to tick the donor box, it relies on encouraging men to think of women as fuckholes, or as Twisty says meatsocks, as *things* to be fucked, as challenges to face, not fully human, it sets up the idea that it doesn’t matter how you *get inside* a woman, the point is you must (rape floating around as an idea yet?), because you are a man, and she is a woman (any woman who is not that thin, that polished, that waxed, that young is not really a *woman* in any relevant sense of the word, but hell, you can still force your way inside those *ugly moles* as well if they piss you off) .

Here we have on the one hand “Oooh, step up for your grisly rape stories right here! Don’t worry, not *your* daughter…oh, yes, someone else’s, but piffle! TWO dead women. Two dead ASIAN women! Two dead Asian female prostitutes! Murdered. Together. Oooh-eee! Wrong, but a little bit kinky, no?”

And then on the other hand “See how hot? I know you want to asssert your manliness by jamming it in her. Yeah, you don’t know her, but women are all the same, those stuck up bitches, might as well be a hot bitch as some ugly bitch. You should give it to her. Dead or alive, consenting or not, she wants it, you’ve got it, get inside her!”

So. Fuck the fucking universe. And fuck your ‘but, but’ style arguments or defences if you’ve got em.
